THE GREAT TASTE TRAIL
In a stroke of genius inspired by great weather and easy topography, the Tasman region has developed one of New Zealand’s most popular cycle trails. Why is it so popular? Because no other is so frequently punctuated by stops for food, wine, craft beer and art, as it passes through a range of landscapes from bucolic countryside to estuary boardwalk.
The Great Taste Trail (www.heartofbiking.org.nz) stretches 174km from Nelson to Kaiteriteri, with plans afoot to propel it further inland. While it can be ridden in full over a few days, staying in accommodation en route, it lends itself even better to day trips tailored to suit various interests and levels of ability.
Nelson, Mapua and Motueka are all good places to set off from, with numerous bike tour companies offering freedom hire, maps and advice. Highlights include wine touring around the Waimea area, Rabbit Island’s easy forest trails, and the particularly scenic section from Motueka to Kaiteriteri traversing a fun mountain-bike park along the way.
